International Criminal Court (ICC)

In this committee, we will put Willy Wonka, the famous candy manufacturer, on trial for human rights violations. Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory is full of strange and dangerous inventions, and many children face harm in his factory, like getting stuck in chocolate pipes or being turned into giant blueberries. His factory is also home to the Oompa Loompas; migrant workers working under questionable conditions. There’s also the issue of the sugar in his candy. We know that too much sugar can be bad for people’s health, especially kids. Delegates will discuss whether Willy Wonka is responsible for promoting unhealthy habits with his candy and whether his actions break rules about protecting people’s safety and well-being. You’ll decide if Willy Wonka should be held accountable for the harm caused in his factory and what, if any, punishment he should face. ICC involves writing long depositions so you will need strong writing and presenting skills for this debate. It is recommended to read the Roald Dahl book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” or watch the movie.
This committee is best suited to students with good English skills and some experience of MUN.

President
Derek Ding
Introduction
My name is Derek Ding, and I shall be presiding over the case of the “People v. Wonka”.
“Who can take a sunrise? Sprinkle it with Dew? Cover it in chocolate and a miracle of two? The Candy Man… Yes, the Candy Man can”.
But the Candy Man may not be the jolly, joyful man you expect. Under his vibrant coat and magical factory, hide dirty little secrets that he does not want people to know. Behind all the rainbows, the edible grass, and the chocolate river; lies torture and carelessness.
In today’s case, the man has been accused of exposing minors to hazardous conditions, misrepresenting safety protocols, and exploiting workers by the children that he has neglected.
Come with me, and let’s explore a world of pure imagination, in a scenario of What If?

Willy Wonka—chocolate mastermind or a danger to society? His factory may look like a dreamland, but let’s not sugarcoat the facts. Kids have been stretched, shrunk, and turned into blueberries under his watch. His workers? A mysterious, unpaid labor force. And don’t forget the mountains of candy leading to terrible cavities. Is he a misunderstood genius or a reckless businessman who must be held accountable?
Well, it’s all up to you! Prove yourself worthy and you might just walk away with your very own “golden ticket”!
Let the trial begin!
